The different types of heat treatment

High Temperature Stress relieving

Our heat treatment process overs can be used to carry out stress relieving on metal to reduce residual stresses in the material.

The process involves heating the metal to a high temperature and then cooling it rapidly. This rapid cooling process creates a hardening effect on the metal. The heat treatment system can be used on a variety of metals, including aluminium, brass, and steel.

The process is used to improve the strength and hardness of a metal to prevent cracking or warping during subsequent machining. Additionally, high temperature stress relieving can help to improve the dimensional stability of a material.

Polyimide Curing

Polyimide curing is used to improve the dimensional stability and mechanical properties of plastics. It can also be used to improve the electrical and thermal properties of plastics.

Polyimide curing is a process in which a polyimide resin is heated in the presence of an acid or base catalyst. The heat causes the polymer chains to break down and reform which results in a harder and more durable material. The addition of the catalyst helps to speed up the process and improve the final properties of the material.

Thermal Annealing

Annealing is a heat treatment process used to modify the physical and/or chemical properties of a material. The process involves heating the material to a high temperature and then slowly allowing it to cool over several days.

Paint curing and Adhesive Bonding

Paint curing is a process where a paint film is allowed to dry and harden before being subjected to further processing.

This can improve the physical and chemical properties of the paint film, as well as the appearance.

Metal Heat treatment FAQ

Advantages of metal heat treatment

There are many advantages as to why you should use heat treatment:

  • To improve the mechanical properties of a material
  • To change the microstructure of a material
  • To relieve stresses in a material
  • To harden or soften a material
  • To improve the wear resistance of a material
  • To improve the corrosion resistance of a material

What metals can be heat treated?

Ferrous metals such as Iron and Steel are the biggest types of metals that are heat treated.

Hydrogen Embrittlement Relief

Embrittlement Relief is sometimes referred to as stress relief baking.

It is a heat treatment process that is used to relieve the residual stresses that are found in metals after the manufacturing process has been completed.

De-embrittlement baking is used to remove the hydrogen that is found in the metal and to improve the ductility of the metal.

This process is often used on metals that are going to be used in high stress environments, such as aircraft parts.
